What this fund is

iShares MSCI World Small Cap UCITS ETF is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) from iShares, traded under the ticker WSML (ISIN IE00BF4RFH31). In a single purchase you get a diversified basket of holdings rather than a stake in just one business. In plain terms it is about owning small slices of companies, so you share in their growth when they do well — and their falls when they don't, spread broadly across markets worldwide. It follows the MSCI World Small Cap index (passive investing): it tracks the market rather than relying on a manager, keeping running costs down, and its largest holdings include SANDISK CORP, BLK ICS USD LIQ AGENCY DIS and CARPENTER TECHNOLOGY CORP. With about 3582 holdings (the ten largest ≈ 4.8%), your money is diversified rather than concentrated in a handful of names.

By geography it is weighted towards ~62.6% United States, ~12.5% Japan and ~4.3% United Kingdom. Its heaviest sectors are ~20.1% Industrials and ~14.8% Technology. Investors often use a broad fund like this as a long-term 'core' holding — a single building block that covers much of a global portfolio in one trade. Its ongoing charge (TER) is 0.35% a year — about €35 a year on a €10,000 holding, taken automatically from the fund. It is an accumulating share class: dividends are rolled straight back in, compounding your returns rather than landing in your account as cash.

It holds the underlying investments directly (physical replication); it is domiciled in Ireland and UCITS-regulated, a European standard built to protect everyday investors and trades in USD. Its price has swung about 49.5% over the past year, which describes how much its price tends to move rather than whether it is good. It launched in 2018. As with any investment, its value can go down as well as up, and past performance is not a guide to future results. (Fund data sourced from iShares.)

What your money could grow into

Pick a monthly amount and a number of years to see how regular investing can add up over time. These are your own assumptions — an illustration, not a prediction.

How this works: an educational scenario, not a forecast. We compound monthly and add your monthly amount each month. “Expected annual return” is your own assumption — pick a cautious one; real markets are bumpy and can fall. “Adjust for inflation” simply restates the result in today’s spending power. The fee figure includes the yearly fund fee (TER) and the growth those fees would otherwise have earned. The fund comparison repeats each fund’s last-12-months return every year — a rough illustration only, which real funds never do. Not advice.
