What this fund is

State Street® SPDR® S&P® U.S. Utilities Select Sector UCITS ETF (Acc) is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) from SPDR, traded under the ticker SXLU (ISIN IE00BWBXMB69). It lets you buy a basket of holdings in a single trade, spreading your money across them rather than one company. At its core it is a focused, thematic fund: it concentrates on the utilities part of the market, so it lives or dies by that one area rather than the economy as a whole. Underneath, it is about owning small slices of companies, so you share in their growth when they do well — and their falls when they don't. It follows the S&P Utilities Select Sector Daily Capped 35/20 Index index (passive investing): it tracks the market rather than relying on a manager, keeping running costs down, and its largest holdings include NextEra Energy Inc., Southern Company and Duke Energy Corporation.

It holds around 31 positions (the ten largest ≈ 57.6%), spreading risk so no single holding decides your outcome. Its biggest country exposures are ~100% United States. By industry it concentrates most in ~100% Utilities. A focused fund like this is typically held as a smaller 'satellite' position around a broader core — a way to lean into one theme, not usually a portfolio's only holding. Its ongoing charge (TER) is 0.15% a year — about €15 a year on a €10,000 holding, taken automatically from the fund. It is an accumulating share class: dividends are rolled straight back in, compounding your returns rather than landing in your account as cash.

It holds the underlying investments directly (physical replication); it is domiciled in Ireland and UCITS-regulated, a European standard built to protect everyday investors and trades in USD. Its price has swung about 15.1% over the past year — a gauge of how much the value moves, not a judgement of quality. It launched in 2015. Like any investment, it can lose value as well as gain, and what it did before does not predict what it will do next. (Fund data sourced from SPDR.)

How this works: an educational scenario, not a forecast. We compound monthly and add your monthly amount each month. “Expected annual return” is your own assumption — pick a cautious one; real markets are bumpy and can fall. “Adjust for inflation” simply restates the result in today’s spending power. The fee figure includes the yearly fund fee (TER) and the growth those fees would otherwise have earned. The fund comparison repeats each fund’s last-12-months return every year — a rough illustration only, which real funds never do. Not advice.
